Snapchat partners with Amazon to bolster shopping services

Picture messaging app Snapchat will soon allow users to order items they photograph directly from Amazon.

Just when you thought Snapchat had fallen under the radar, and was no longer important for business, it’s partnered with online giant Amazon to create an innovative new shopping service.

Developers at Snapchat have been testing a new way to search for products on Amazon.com through the Snapchat camera on users’ smartphones – and now they are ready to slowly roll this service out to consumers.

The new feature will be called Visual Search, and it will literally allow consumers to point the app’s camera at products, and go directly to Amazon to buy it from the e-tailer’s store.

In a statement to users the messaging app explains: “Beginning this week, we’re testing a new way to search for products on Amazon right from the Snapchat camera. We’ll be rolling it out slowly, but we wanted to announce it to everyone at the same time.

“It’s super easy to use,” the company continues. “Simply point your Snapchat camera at a physical product or barcode, and press and hold on the camera screen to get started. When the item or barcode is recognised, an Amazon card will appear on-screen, surfacing a link for that product or similar ones available on Amazon. Tap your selection to visit the Amazon App (if you have it installed on your phone) or Amazon.com, where you can complete your purchase or keep browsing.”

The news comes after the company revealed it had lost three million users in three months.

Certainly in the jewellery industry, Snapchat has not been one of the social media channels in focus – with more companies choosing to connect with customers on Facebook and Instagram.

With Instagram Stories strengthening its shopping services though, Snapchat believes its partnership with Amazon will provide consumers with the “fastest way to shop”.

The statement concludes: “Snapchat has always been the fastest way to communicate, and now it’s the fastest way to shop.”

If this takes off, jewellery brands stocked on Amazon may soon find sales through Snapchat rising.
