The raid took place at Westfield London shopping centre in London’s Shepherd’s Bush area in the early hours of Wednesday morning. A group of up to 10 people wearing balaclavas smashed through a fire exit at the centre and then broke into De Beers and Tiffany.

Witnesses said window displays and glass cases were cleared of diamond jewellery. Reports have estimated the value of the haul at £1 million.

A police chase then ensued across west London with the thieves escaping in three stolen cars. One of the cars has since been recovered in northwest London.

The raid was the first incident of organised crime at the shopping centre which opened in October 2008.
