UK hallmarking declines slow in January

Total items down 5.9% with palladium strongest and silver weakest.

Hallmarking took a turn for the better in January, with a dip of just 5.9% compared to December when the total number of items hallmarked in the UK fell by nearly a quarter.

In January 615,271 items were hallmarked at the four UK assay offices, according to figures compiled by the Birmingham Assay Office.

Of all the metals palladium enjoyed the strongest year on year uplift, with the total number of items hallmarked up 29.5%, followed by platinum which was up 4%. Silver was the hardest hit metal in the month, dropping 13.5% on 2011’s figures, while gold slipped 2.5%.

Within gold hallmarking 24ct delivered mixed messages with 999 parts gold down 85.5% but 990 parts up 971.4% – both of these purities are classed as 24ct gold. 14ct gold suffered in January with a drop of 41% and 18ct gold fell 3.9%. Year-on-year increases were registered in both 22ct gold and 9ct gold, up 1.9% and 5.9% respectively.

In silver, hallmarking of Britannia rocketed 575.5% but all other purities were down with fine silver, sterling silver and 800 parts silver dropping 30.1%, 14.1% and 20% respectively.

It was the middle purities that performed best for platinum with 950 parts and 900 parts up 4% and 33% respectively, while no 999 parts or 850 parts pieces were hallmarked equating to a 100% drop for both.

Palladium, which had the strongest month of all the metals, showed increases across the board with 999 parts up 100%, 950 parts up 25.7% and 500 parts up 102.4%.
