Here, Wongs managing director Peter Wong answers Professional Jewellers’ 2015 review questions.

What have been the company’s 2015 highlights?


Winning a number of industry awards this year. In Liverpool – Best Independent Retailer hosted by Liverpool BID company scoring 100% two years running in their mystery shop awards. ‘Best Independent Retailer 2015’ Award at the Buyers Power Awards at Jewellery and Watch Show Birmingham and CMJ members award at the CMJ Conference.

On the whole, how would you say business has been in 2015?

Very good up to now. December can be the icing on the cake but we’ll have to see how that works out.

What consumer trends have you noticed?

White metal continues to be strong, particularly platinum and although the popularity of gold is supposed to be on the rise we haven’t witnessed it yet.

What products have sold well for you?

Engagement rings have sold in higher quantities this year because we invested in a greater selection at the end of last year and have seen a good result because of that.

What has surprised you about business in 2015?

So far we have traded well this year but December is proving a challenge with lower footfall and lower ATV than expected.

What plans do you have for 2016?

Expansion into another city within the North West.

What predictions do you have for you business in 2016?

I’m sure what we are doing well in now, which is selling diamond engagement and wedding jewellery, will continue to grow as we inject more money into this key area for Wongs.
