Birmingham’s Marie Haddleton campaigning for new jewellery workshops.

An 84-year-old woman has stepped up to try and revitalise Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.

Marie Haddleton has created an organisation named the Jewellery Quarter Heritage, according to a report in the Birmingham Mail, and is intent on encouraging residents to turn empty buildings into workshops and is working with Birmingham City Council to introduce affordable work spaces to the area.

The area in Birmingham, which is home to many jewellery businesses large and small, is already under the protection of the Jewellery Quarter Conservation and Management Plan but Haddleton believes that not enough is being done to maintain the area’s heritage.

Jewellery Quarter Heritage will not be an association with members but will rather be a working body that will look for donations from the industry to cover its own overheads and fund projects.
