Retailers selling costume jewels face more demanding legislation.

The Birmingham Assay Office (BAO) has expanded its nickel testing facilities and remains Europe’s leading test house for nickel, amid increasingly demanding legislation for jewellery selling costume jewellery and accessories.

A release from the BAO said “[Those who] trade in costume jewellery and accessories need to understand increasingly demanding legislation, and growing concerns about nickel, lead, cadmium and other potentially harmful metals.”

The Assay Office is also offering tests appropriate to textiles, such as Azo dye testing.

The BAO’s chief executive and Assay master Michael Allchin will participate in a number of Industry Insight sessions at The Jewellery Show next month, and will make his debut on the Fashion Accessories program.

He will take part in a discussion entitled Keep your business safe – Making sense of product safety legislation, a brief synopsis of existing and forthcoming product safety requirements relating to Costume Jewellery and Fashion Accessories.

He will also be part of the session The Rising price of precious metals and how to innovate in times of change, and will present his annual review for fine jewellers, entitled Making sense of 2011, creating a successful strategy for 2012.
