Auction house Bonhams has promoted its UK jewellery director to a global role.
After 10 years as the director of jewellery for the UK and Europe, Jean Ghika will now lead Bonham’s growing international jewellery business in the position of global director of fine jewellery.
The 25-year veteran at the auction house succeeds Matthew Girling, who has been promoted to global chief executive officer of the company.
Girling will continue to serve as auctioneer at jewellery sales in London, New York and Hong Kong as chairman emeritus for the fine jewellery department, while Ghika will oversee sales at Bonham’s offices in London, New York, Hong Kong and Los Angeles.
During her tenure at Bonhams, Ghika has been responsible for several world records, including the highest price per carat at auction for a fancy deep blue diamond, as well as the highest price for a spinel
“All four selling locations in London, New York, Hong Kong and LA have established themselves with our clients and we have created a distinct identity in the marketplace, characterized by our personal approach and client service,” Ghika said. “I look forward to continuing this approach and developing the global offering, working in partnership with talented colleagues throughout the Bonhams U.K. and European network and also in the US with Susan Abeles and Asia with Graeme Thompson and their teams.”
Jean Ghika is considered a leading expert in the jewellery industry, and was recognised in the 2015 Professional Jeweller Hot 100 as a Business Big Shot.
