An increasing number of men are interested in wearing engagement rings, a new study finds.
According to Lyst’s 2019 Wedding report, searches for male engagement rings have risen by 66% year-on-year, while Pinterest says it has seen a 280% increase in people pinning images of male engagement rings on its platform.
In Lyst’s Wedding Report, the global fashion search platform attributes this trend to the worldwide media attention Ed Sheeran got when he started wearing an engagement ring last year.
Talking to the Evening Standard Insider, Lyst’s insights reporter, Morgane Le Caer, also says the legalisation of same-sex marriage in the UK has helped this niche market boom.
Le Caer says: “The legalisation of same-sex marriage has had an impact on the demand for men’s engagement rings, but we also have to take into account the fact that more and more [straight] men simply feel proud to be engaged and just want to be on the same level as their partners.”
Ed Sheeran’s ring may have caught the media’a eye, but Michael Buble has always worn one, alongside couples such as Tom Daley and Dustin Lance Black.
Going into the styles men are opting for, Lyst’s reporter tells the Evening Standard Insider that men typically choose plainer bands, occasionally with symbolic stones, and are three times more likely to go for a silver ring than a gold one.
If they are looking to splash out a bit more, men favour shopping with well-known brands like Cartier and Tiffany & Co.
