Clogau talks of plans to reopen Welsh gold mine

Plans in development stage but fresh gold stream could be possible.

Clogau Gold managing director Ben Roberts has given an interview to Welsh newspaper the Daily Post talking about his "long-tem goal" to reopen a Welsh gold mine.

While Clogau Gold told Professional Jeweller that plans for the mine are very much still in development, the concept of reviving the Bontddu mine, near Barmouth, is a real possibility and there will be more confirmed details to come in the following months.

The Welsh jewellery company believes that reopening the mine could lead to a fresh stream of Welsh gold.

Roberts told the Daily Post: "Welsh gold is one of the most important USPs for the product, and also in terms of credibility and sustainability. I get the odd nudge from stockists asking how long the gold can last for, and it’s quite simple. We have undoubtedly the largest stockpile of Welsh gold and are still buying it from various sources.

“We want to try and maintain that because it is so important to us, but there would be no better constant supply than running to the expense of opening the mine.”
