College lecturer takes jewellery company full time

Award-winning Sheila Kerr to quit job and open studio.

College lecturer Shelia Kerr has decided to give up her job to focus full time on her jewellery business Sheila Kerr Jewellery.

Kerr, who is based in Prestwick, has been running the jewellery business that sells costume and silver jewellery, as well as bridal tiaras, for three years but has only now decided to make it a full-time venture rather than a hobby.

The amateur-turned-professional is a qualified silversmith after taking a course at Ayr College, which she completed at night while working as a business lecturer at Clydebank College.

As well as selling her work through her website Kerr has also been running workshops on jewellery design for others wishing to learn. And deapite running her business part time, Kerr has picked up two awards from Indght magazine for Jewellery Designer of the Year and Businesswoman of the Year.

Kerr has now signed for a studio in Courtyard Studios near the harbour in Irvine and she will be moving in next month.
