The De Beers Group will be launched a series of live web-based events called Stronger Together.

The diamond giant says the aim is to bring together its industry partners to discuss ways to navigate this challenging time together.

Each event will be led by guest speakers from the Group’s executive team, who will discuss pertinent matters for the diamond industry during the COVID-19 crisis. The speakers will also share their professional advice and learnings, including around human resources, marketing, communications, innovation and finance, before opening the floor for further discussion around particular challenges faced.

De Beers Group chief executive, Bruce Cleaver, will kick off the first event on April 29 at 12pm BST, alongside Paul Rowley, executive vice president of diamond trading.

“I am aware that none of us have a clear path to resolve the current crisis,” shares Cleaver, “but one thing I do know is that if we work together, we will be able to do more than individually and therefore emerge stronger.”

De Beers also announced this week that it will be cutting its diamond production by 20% this year due to disruptions to the supply chain from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Group says the pandemic has impacted mining operations, wholesale trading activity and consumer traffic in key consumer markets.

The industry is suffering particularly from the lockdown in India, which polishes and cuts 90% of the world’s diamonds.

Sales of diamond jewellery has also been hit by store closures, particularly in the US and China – the world’s biggest markets.
