A new report from diamond retailer 77 Diamonds reveals the celebrity engagement ring trends set to influence consumers in their purchasing decisions over the next 12 months.
According to the research, which saw a dedicated team pouring over data relating to 100 recent celebrity engagements, when it comes to metal choice platinum was over taken by white gold in 2016, and yellow gold has become more popular in 2017.
The oval cut diamond was a celebrity favourite in 2013 and 2014, but since then emerald has been the cut of choice for the last three years.
Since 2014, the cost per carat has changed dramatically, with celebrities spending much more on diamond quality than in previous years. This is a huge shift from the ‘bigger being better’ attitude, and as celebrities care and share about the quality of their engagement rings, consumers will hopefully follow suit.
In the analysis, which included rings from Kate Middleton to Kim Kardashian, the average cost of a celebrity engagement ring hit £1 million for the first time in 2016.
Other key findings included a note that celebrity engagements peak during August, December and January. With celebrity proposals happening during these times, many social media channels will be filled with news, images and posts about the ring which sealed the deal.
Looking at first vs second marriages, first timers spend an average of 0.39% of their net worth on the ring, while second timers, on the other hand, spend on average six times more on engagement rings.
While this research looks at celebrity engagement rings, often the trends of the stars filter down to what consumers want to wear too. Most recently, A-list celebs have sparked a consumer return to the signet rings, Prince Harry’s girlfriend wearing a Missoma ring cause the British brand’s site to crash, and following Pippa Middleton’s engagement retailers noted an increase in demand for Asscher-cut diamond rings.
