Plymouth-based Drakes Jewellers raised £24,000 for local charity, St Luke’s Hospice, at its 2020 gala.
Now in its fourth year, the 2020 Drakes Diamond Gala welcomed 320 guests on Saturday, March 7, almost 70 years to the day since the independent jewellers began trading on Plymouth’s high street.
As always with the event, which has become popular among locals, the theme was kept under wraps until the doors opened at 7pm. The ballroom was transformed into a sparkling carnival with the ceiling adorned in bright orange and black with twinkling lights and the tables were dressed with floral centre pieces and orange feather displays. Before the introductions even began, the night started with dancing from professionals.
Drakes celebrated their 70th anniversary at the event with a 20 meter aisle runner along the corridor showcasing their rich heritage; a speech from John Hirshman; and a cake which was shared with all guests in attendance.
Guests were treated to a three course meal and were also invited to take part in a Stand for a Grand competition where one lucky guest won £1,000 cash to take home on the night.
There was also a charity raffle with over 140 prizes with a total value of over £7,000. The gala also offered lots in a live and silent auction on the night, which raised just over £17,000 for the charity.
Drakes director and organiser of the event, Monique Hirshman, remarks: “I am completely overwhelmed by the generosity of our guests who made raising this amount possible for the incredible St Luke’s Hospice. This is a charity so close to our hearts and having seen the amazing work they carry out within our community; I am so proud to be able to support them.
“Each year I’m touched by the comments from our guests and it is so lovely to know an evening of such fun can benefit so many families in need. What a way to start our special 70th year!”
Head of fundraising for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth, Penny Hannah, adds: “We are honoured that Drakes Jewellers kindly choose to support our local independent charity for the 4th time, as a business they understand we need the support in our city to keep our services available to local families, when cure is not a possibility but comfort, care, love and support is.”
“It is important to know you are in safe hands when it matters most, and after 70 successful years in business, Drakes Jewellers have put a lot of rings on many hands! £24,000 will care for 24 families at home for a week with our St Luke’s teams by their side. This is an incredible amount to raise through one event in aid of our charity, in fact it is the biggest amount raised in this way so another winning record for Drakes Jewellers to celebrate!”
This is the forth Drakes Diamond Gala Drakes have hosted in support of St Luke’s Hospice, and together with their past jewellery recycling scheme have raised in excess of £85,000 for the charity.
St Luke’s provide specialist care, advice and support to people with progressive life-limiting illnesses in Plymouth, South West Devon and East Cornwall.
