Editor’s View: “The next challenge all jewellery businesses face is Christmas”


It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and while the radio is playing ‘Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town’ and the TV channels are broadcasting movies which show elves working hard in their workshops to get everything ready for the big day, the reality for the jewellery industry is that consumers are coming to town, and you have all been working tirelessly to get everything prepared for the festive trading season which has finally arrived.

This year I have had the absolute pleasure of travelling around the country to meet some of the UK’s greatest independent and multiple jewellery retailers. It’s been an eye opening experience and has given me a greater understanding of what it takes for a bricks and mortar store to thrive on today’s high street.

Now, the next challenge all jewellery businesses face is Christmas.

December is a month the entire industry gears up to. Everyone has a role to play in making sure consumer dreams come true on Christmas morning.

While this year has been packed with uncertainty and change, recent news for jewellery retailers has been positive. In October UK high street retailers reported their first sales growth since January as consumers spent more freely on lifestyle goods such as jewellery.

In fact, jewellery saw the highest growth in the sector performance category, and this is before brands and retailers started slashing their prices for Black Friday. Even looking back at the summer, although footfall was often down, spending was frequently on the rise.

Online spend has been so phenomenal that e-tail experts IMRG-Capgemini have raised their 2016 sales growth forecast by 15%. Elsewhere, the latest Adobe Digital Insights study reveals UK shoppers are expected to spend a record breaking £24.3 billion online during the run up to Christmas.

Christmas is described as the “season to be jolly” and I do hope this year brings Christmas cheer to you and your business.
