Brighton-based independent jewellery Baroque Bespoke Jewellery is feeling positive about the year ahead following a successful Christmas period.

During the month of December, the jeweller located in Brighton Lanes recorded an 18% lift in sales compared to the year prior.

In fact, Baroque Bespoke Jewellery tells Professional Jeweller that December 2018 was the best month of trading the business has ever seen during its 12 year history.

The jewellery retailer’s director, Pippa Knowles, shares: “Brighton is always quite busy and buzzy at the peak times of the year and, whilst the Christmas period did feel a bit more upbeat than previous years despite the bad Brexit vibes, I think our success is based on a few factors including our multiple returning customers and worth-of-mouth referrals, alongside the amazing team that we have working with us. In addition to this we are tailoring our stock more to what our customers want.

“We also had some display space available in the shop next door over and up to the Christmas period which made for a much better looking street than having an empty shop next door. At the moment this is a big problem in the Lanes as there are many empty shops up for rent which isn’t making the surrounding area as thriving as it could be – again we seem to be bucking this trend as by design we are more of a destination shop.”

Instagram has also proved a successful tool for the jewellery retailer, which has seen posts on the social media channel boost business.

In terms of product, engagement rings dominated sales, while the workshop reached full capacity during December as customers opted for bespoke designs.

“We are currently seeing a big surge in coloured gemstones for engagement rings in certain hues, fancy shaped stones and also rustic diamonds are increasingly popular,” shares Knowles.
