One of the biggest questions on the industry’s lips through the latter half of this year has been, ‘What happened to IJL’?

International Jewellery London was cancelled in both 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

Since the 2021 event was called off back in August 2020, would-be attendees have had little to no explanation of whether the show organiser Reed Exhibitions plans on resurrecting it in 2022 and beyond.

The last update to the IJL website was in August 2020 and reads: “As a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we have taken the difficult decision to not run IJL in 2021. IJL is one of Reed Exhibitions’ valued brands, and we will continue to stay close to and monitor the industry as the situation becomes clearer over the coming months.”

No further updates have been made in the 15 months since, and when Professional Jeweller reached out to Reed Exhibitions to enquire about the future of the show it received no response.

Will IJL make a comeback?

Fortunately, a former member of the Reed Exhibitions team was able to give his take on what happened to IJL and whether it is set to return.

Former Reed Exhibitions sales manager, Lennox Addo, explained that, as per his understanding, the decision has indeed been made to permanently cut IJL from the Reed Exhibitions portfolio of events.

“Is it coming back? I do not think so.”

“It’s no secret in the industry that the show had been weakening year on year and was feeling a little tired,” Addo told Professional Jeweller. “Trade shows need a lot of passion, commitment and effort from the people leading it and if this is not there the event will not be successful.

“Is it coming back? I do not think so.”

A silver lining

Fortunately, the UK will not be left without its own jewellery trade show for too long.

“I felt it was the wrong decision to cut IJL,” Addo reveals. “I believe in the jewellery industry, and I believe in live events, and I know the sector deserves to have a fantastic UK trade exhibition that appeals both to national and international prospects.”

To this end, he has partnered with CloserStill Media to bring Jewellery Show, a new event for the industry that will debut in September 2022.

Not wanting to give too much away yet, Addo concluded: “I have been out talking to many people in the industry and I know we want a successful trade show in the UK next year.

“I have lots of exciting brands already confirmed and many plans in place to ensure the most exciting trade show in years!”
