Professional Jeweller sits down with Cathie Osborne, managing director of B2B platform and sales platform Retaissance.
She talks her passion for independent brands and why she cannot wait for the return of CMJ evenings and the Professional Jeweller Awards.
How many years have you worked in the jewellery sector and how did you get into the industry?
I have been working in the jewellery industry for over a decade now. My background is sales and marketing and our agency has been growing brands internationally for as long as I can remember.
What do you most enjoy about working in the industry?
I know this sounds a cliché but I find the most enjoyable part of the job is the relationships we build at all ends of the supply chain.
What’s the most difficult part of your job?
The trend forecasting and innovation of services can be really challenging. Watching consumer behaviour changes and ensuring you have the services to help retailers maximise them is so key at the moment.
What’s the first thing you do when you get into work in the morning?
My day tends to follow time zones, with Australia early morning, UK and Europe throughout the day and America late afternoon.
The normalisation of Zoom meetings has made the world a very small place and connecting with your team, brands and buyers around the world has never been easier.
What’s your most memorable moment in the industry to date?
I really love the shows, and the CMJ evenings and Professional Jeweller awards are always great fun to attend and meet old friends.
Which other company or brand (inside or outside the industry) do you most admire and why?
My passion is independent brands, that have incredible stories, are ethical and fair, protect craftsmanship and tradition and create exceptional designs. Annoushka and A-Line Clothing are at the top for me.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
You have two ears and one mouth, use them in right proportion.
What do you most enjoy doing outside of work?
Cooking – it’s my go to. I love to make people happy.
If you won the lottery, what one luxury item or experience would you buy?
Annoushka X The Vampire’s Wife Charm Bracelet.
If you could invite three people to a dinner party, who would they be?
Coco Chanel, Bradley Cooper and Elon Musk.
What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?
My husband’s dry wit has kept me laughing out loud for 25 years, unfortunately I can’t think of an instance where we could put it in print.
Tell us something about yourself that none of your colleagues know?
I have an entrepreneur’s mindset so my mind tends to wander to the next opportunity for a brand. I have to be really disciplined to stay in the now.
