Beata Hughes is jewellery designer for diamond-set ring mount specialist River Mounts.
Here, she talks her start in the industry, an enduring love of all things antique jewellery and her surprise love of Metallica.
How many years have you worked in the jewellery sector and how did you get into the industry?
I have been in the industry for over 25 years. It started as a hobby when I decided to make my own jewellery at the age of 16.
I soon fell in love with the industry. I then decided to learn more by studying to become a fully qualified goldsmith.
After this I went to art school in Budapest to further my studies and became a jewellery designer.
Following this I became qualified as an FGA/DGA gemmologist in 2014. The next step I wish to complete is my jewellery valuation course.
What’s the first thing you do when you get into work in the morning?
I check my emails and make that all-important first espresso of the day.
What’s your most memorable moment in the industry to date?
Winning the Professional Jeweller 2020 Fine Jewellery Award.
What do you most enjoy about working in the industry?
I love coming up with designs that will really wow our customers.
What’s the most difficult part of your job?
Nothing – I love every minute of it!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Never give up!
Which other company or brand (inside or outside the industry) do you most admire and why?
I love old antique jewellery, the detail in the workmanship is fantastic so any company that does fine, detailed workmanship – I suppose like Boodles.
Tell us something about yourself that none of your colleagues know?
I like Metallica.
If you won the lottery, what one luxury item or experience would you buy?
I’d love to travel and see as many landmarks as possible.
If you could invite any three people to a dinner party, who would they be?
Michael Stipe from REM, my Mum and Dad.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I love watching films and walking my dog, Ted.
What was the last thing that made you laugh out loud?
My kids doing impersonations of my husband!
