Global jewellery sales total £389m as Christie’s slams the hammer on 2018


Auction house Christie’s is celebrating a record breaking year for jewellery as 2018 comes to a close.

Over the last 12 months, global jewellery auction sales totaled $ 492.3 million (£388.6m) at Christie’s.

Of this total, $484.5 million came from live auction, while $7.8 million was acquired online – an area that is increasingly growing for the business.

Memorable sales during this record breaking year include The Winston Pink Legacy, a rare pink diamond that fetched $50 million (£38.4m), setting the world record for price paid per carat for a pink diamond at auction.

The Peacock Necklace also achieved the world record for a Kashmir sapphire necklace sold at auction, and the Bulgari Masterpiece, which featured a rare 8.08ct blue diamond, sold for $18.3m (£14.8m).

The auction house says 2018 marks 25 consecutive years at the jewellery auction market leader.

International head of jewellery at Christie’s, Rahul Kadakia, remarks: “We are delighted to announce that Christie’s maintains its position as the jewelry market leader for the 25th consecutive year. Over the course of 2018, we have witnessed the historic auction of art and jewelry from The Collection of Peggy and David Rockefeller, the blockbuster sales of The Winston Pink Legacy in Geneva, The Peacock Necklace in Hong Kong, the exceptional price achieved for the sensational Fancy Vivid Blue Diamond Ring by Bulgari and the world auction record realized for Suzanne Belperron in New York.

“We also saw an increase in participation for our online sales which encourage clients to enjoy the auction experience at all price points. As we move into 2019, our global team of jewelry specialists look forward to bringing to market the very best jewels for our clients.”
