Describes small designers as "change makers" during JeDeCo talk.
JeDeCo recently welcomed Fairtrade Gold international programme coordinator Greg Valerio to its gallery in London, where he discussed how small jewellery designers can be the drivers of change when it comes to the use and promotion of Fairtrade gold in the UK.
Valerio spoke on the subject of Fairtrade silver and gold, and the challenges around diamonds and traceable gemstones. The visit drew a full house, with members of the JeDeCo collective in attendance alongside jewellery designers wishing to understand more about Valerio’s work and his campaigns.
Designer Farah Quereshi told Professional Jeweller that Valerio regards small jewellery designers as "change makers" in the industry. During the talk Valerio told the group he believes that if enough designers decide to buy Fairtrade silver and gold and traceable gemstones, it would pave the "for great and positive change".
Over the past 10 years there has been much development in the realms of Fairtrade precious metals. The next step is the development of safe environments for Fairtrade gold mining in Africa, with funding from Comic Relief.
