Hot 100 2014: Monique Daniels

Monique Daniels was named a NexGems in Professional Jeweller's Hot 100 2014 (Kalory.co.uk)

Professional Jeweller first discovered Monique Daniels’ work at New Designers 2013. As a graduate she showcased her Polyhedra collection of steel jewellery, and we were hooked on her sharp, clean lines and subtle use of colour.

Monique has continued to impress over the past 12 months, gaining a place at The Goldsmiths’ Centre, where she now runs her business from, and receiving an award for her work at the Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship & Design Awards 2014.

She also took part in One Year On at New Designers 2014 as a new talent making waves in the industry. “But being accepted into the industry as part of Professional Jeweller’s Hot 100 is my greatest business achievement,” she says.

For any start-up business, the first year is often the toughest, but Monique says the lessons she has learned have been truly valuable. “I have faced many challenges, such as workload and the financial side of things, but I feel really lucky to have had support in making the right choices,” she says.

For anyone else starting out, Monique says be prepared to work for it. “Work hard. Really really hard. All the time,” she smiles. “Learn from the knockbacks and make work that is true to yourself.”

Her work itself is described as complex and dynamic, designed for the modern woman with a Constructivist, fashion-led aesthetic. She experiments with fine jewellery techniques and technology when making her pieces, all in the quest for perfection.

Monique is happy to admit that she’s ever so slightly obsessive about how her pieces are finished. “My work is all about precision so that’s definitely reflected in how I work,” she says. Up next will be the launch of her Hazael collection, a range Monique is currently working on and will present at a number of exhibitions later in the year.
