Brighton is the perfect setting for creative duo Alex Goodman and Nicky Morris who, for the past 14 years, have been building a retail and jewellery brand on the South Coast.
Few businesses suddenly double their sales half way through their second decade, but that is exactly what happened at Goodman Morris last Christmas as trade rocketed. “Doubling our best ever Christmas sales was pretty cool,” remembers Nicky. “Having been trading in our current premises for 14 years we felt that the combination of longevity and commitment to the cause came together. Not only did we increase the month’s takings but our clients purchased really interesting, handmade, big ticket items,” she adds.
This success is encouraging Alex and Nicky to back their vision and focus more of their energies on their own jewellery creations. “We’ve believed for a long time that there is a market for beautifully crafted, well designed, handmade work in the UK. We have been producing work in-house that combines a contemporary aesthetic with timeless craft skills. We are striving to offer a carefully curated mix of our own work complimented by other designers who share a similar ethos to our own,” Nicky explains.
“We have been slowly but surely producing more of our own work and honing our vision of what Goodman Morris is. The last 12 months have paved the way and given us the confidence to continue on that path,” she says.
Living and working together has never fazed Alex and Nicky. “Basically we live and breathe Goodman Morris, it is our passion and our fifth baby,” Nicky says. And they do find time for themselves, family and friends. “Living by the coast is a real bonus. We love the sea. We both relax by getting in it. Alex loves to surf and I’m still swimming four or five times a week. We both enjoy the freedom, mental space and clarity that it gives us.”
