Leanne Rogers, director, Sarah Layton Jewellers

Sarah Layton Jewellers was first recognised by the Professional Jeweller Hot 100 in 2012, when its founder Gill Layton-Hill was named a Retail Star just two years after opening her boutique in Whalley, Lancashire.

Sarah Layton Jewellers has always been a family business, and this year its continuing success has landed Gill’s daughter Leanne Rogers in this prestigious publication. There is no doubt, however, that Leanne’s sister Lauren and her mum could have also been selected as a family dream team. “We work really well as a team, bouncing lots of ideas off each other daily,” Leanne says.

The lesser known members of the Sarah Layton team are Poppy and Trust, Leanne’s two dogs that accompany her on walks to her favourite beauty spot Heaton Park, and to work every day at the Whalley shop.

Where’s Whalley you may ask? “It is a lovely village in a beautiful rural setting,” Leanne explains. “Our nearest cities are a good 45 minute drive away, and we have a plethora of award winning, independent shops and boutiques. I think because we draw from quite a large rural area, along with plenty of tourists (to the picturesque Ribble Valley), we kind of have to do everything, and do it well.”

In just five years, Sarah Layton Jewellers has grown from a tiny shop selling mainly silver jewellery into a large boutique, three times its original size, selling premium brands like Georg Jensen alongside fine jewellery created in its own state-of-the-art workshop with a qualified goldsmith, and a watch service centre.

“With the opening of our new watch and jewellery workshops, we believe we can offer an unrivalled service to our customers for not only repairs and servicing, but bespoke work too. This is an area we are keen to push. Customers love nothing more than seeing an old, unworn item completely transformed into something dazzling, and ultimately unique to them. It’s a real buzz for us too, when we’ve worked so hard coming up with new designs, seeing the process from wax through to setting and finished product — just wow!” exclaims Leanne.
