Expanding into men’s jewellery and opening a new shop in Maidstone.

In a series of Q&As with the Professional Jeweller Hot 100 2013 NexGems, we find out what came next for this savvy set of designers since they were chosen as ones to watch in our annual jewellery industry celebration. Charmian Beaton tells us about her new shop in Maidstone, adding colour to her collections with enamels, resins and gemstones and a little surprise due in November.

Professional Jeweller: You were selected as a Professional Jeweller Hot 100 NexGem – what did this mean for your business?
Charmian Beaton: Having been a designer-maker a long time now, it’s really exciting for the company to be finally recognised for what we do.

PJ: Tell us about the time since the Hot 100 – how has business developed?
CB: We have had crazy times since last summer. Firstly, we expanded into new premises in the centre of Maidstone – it was a really messy move with loads of legal battles but we finally got in last November, just in time for Christmas. I’d had no retail shop all summer and was making from my garden shed, so you can imagine how chaotic it all was! We have yet to fit the workshop out properly but once that all happens it will give us the chance to concentrate on our trade side of the business again.

PJ: Any exciting projects in the pipeline?
CB: Yes of course! I’m working on the next generation of the award-winning Mariposa collection – expect it to feel a bit more edgy and fun with the addition of resin enamel and chain. The new Harmony collection, which was unveiled last year, will expand due to the reaction it received. We will add yellow and rose gold options and coloured stones such as sapphire, tourmaline and chocolate diamonds [to the range]. Brand new this year will be a gents’ collection including cufflinks. I’ve never designed a gents’ collection before, so I’m really excited about this project. The launch will have to be a little later than planned as we have had a lovely surprise – I’m expecting my first baby this November.
