From new stockists to licensing a Pearl & Queenie diffusion line.
In a series of Q&As with the Professional Jeweller Hot 100 2013 NexGems, we find out what came next for this savvy set of designers since they were chosen as ones to watch in our annual jewellery industry celebration. Today we hear from Kathy Dyton, co-founder of jewellery brand Pearl & Queenie with designer Becca Hulbert, who says the Hot 100 has bought more stockists and with it a potential diffusion collection.
Professional Jeweller: You were selected as a Professional Jeweller Hot 100 NexGem – what did this mean for your business?
Kathy Dyton: It meant a lot for our business, as it was industry recognition and also further promoted our brand name. The Ho 100 is also great for getting new stockists, while giving current stockists further confidence in your brand. It says ‘look, even the industry is saying we are hotties’. On a personal level, it’s like a lovely pat on the back for all the hard work we’ve put in and continue to do so.
PJ: Tell us about the time since you were given the Hot 100 accolade – how has business developed?
KD: This year has gone by so quickly – it’s unreal! The brand is definitely evolving, especially if we look back at the past two years since we launched. Our collections are getting more distinct, honed and stronger. Our stockists are becoming more mixed, too, from serious jewellers and lifestyle and gift shops, to fashion retailers including huge cashmere giants Johnstons of Elgin and our beloved independents. We find we are ticking a lot more potential stockists’ boxes than we originally anticipated, which is really interesting.
PJ: Any exciting projects in the pipeline or new collections?
KD: Yes, we’ve been approached by a large licensing company who would like to do a P&Q diffusion range for a large UK multiple. We are currently still in negotiations but it looks likely for AW14. We have a beautiful new collection called Delilah which we are launching at Jewellery & Watch London next month. Every time we make our sample collections, they are nabbed and bought by friends and family, so we think the Delilah range is going to go down a storm. Fingers crossed!
