Lumbers Celebrity Row crew journeys 1097 miles in three weeks.
Lumbers boutique jewellers’ rowing team has achieved two world records in its journey across the country for charity.
The team of six Leicester business men, headed by Lumbers’ owner Dominic Gomersall, started the 21 day trip on June 29 at Land’s End. The destination for the Lumbers Celebrity Row crew is John O’Groats, at the opposite tip of the country.
The purpose of the exercise is for charity, with all donations raised being split equally between Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People, The Prince’s Trust, RNFL and Samantha Dickson Brain Tumor Trust.
It was on their first leg of the journey that the crew broke the record for the fastest time travelling between Lands End and Ilfracombe, which they completed in just 31 hours non-stop, faster than any other entry.
The second world record was achieved on July 9 as they rowed to the half way point of their home county Leicestershire. The team successfully broke the existing record at the Foxton Locks, an ascending ‘staircase’ of 10 locks in South Leicestershire.
With the help of Ben Kay, former Leicester Tiger who was world champion in 2003, winner of 2 European Cups, and five premiership titles, the team raced through the locks to convincingly beat the existing record of 29 minutes, completing all locks in just 20 minutes and 46 seconds.
Gomersall said: “One morning was just wonderful, we were joined by a school of inquisitive and fun bottle-nosed dolphins. There were probably seven or eight who swam alongside us, playing and jumping around the boat for a couple of hours – it certainly distracted the mind from the excruciating rowing pain.”
Lumbers boutique jewellers was voted UK Independent Retail Jeweller of the Year and is the only store outside of London to stock yellow diamonds. Dominic successfully recovered from an operation to remove a brain tumor five years ago and wanted to create an opportunity in which to raise awareness and money for charities whose purpose is to help save and enrich people’s lives.
