Jewellery retailers in England have opened their doors to the public for the very first time since Boris Johnson ordered all non-essential retailers to close on March 25.
After over two months without trading on the high street, multiples, independents and branded boutiques up and down the country have started to welcome back customers – albeit to a different retail environment to what they’ve been used to.
From today, jewellery stores have begun trading in a new normal which includes operating on less members of staff, only letting so many people in at a time, enforcing the 2m social distancing rule and implementing health and safety measures such as washing hands on arrival and serving through perspex screens.
Despite changes to the way the nation will shop during this post-lockdown period, high streets have reported a positive return from customers, with people reportedly queuing from the early hours to get inside the stores they have missed – particularly those with no only presence.
Many jewellers have also reported a positive response to their call for customers to book appointments ahead of time.
Many told Professional Jeweller that they already had appointments in place for the first week back of trading, with many regular customers being eager to come in, see the team and get expert advice on the jewellery they’ve been dreaming of purchasing during lockdown.
Jewellers and suppliers are expecting their to be a boom in bridal jewellery sales, with the lockdown period making people realise what and who they cherish in life, and there is also expected to be an increase in the gifting market, with people wanting to show their appreciation for loved ones more than ever.
