Jewellery thief apprehended in Victoria axe raid

Police appeal for eyewitnesses after H Stain Ltd is targeted.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information following a smash and grab robbery at H Stain Jewellers in Victoria, London, on March 11.

Armed with axes and sledgehammers, four men – two on a moped and two on a motorcycle – pulled up at the shop at 1pm, smashed the glass windows and reached in to grab items on display.

As the suspects attempted to leave the scene a member of the public wrestled the rider off the moped and held him down until police arrived.

The 18-year-old man was taken to a central London police station for questioning. The moped passenger fled on foot to Lower Grosvenor Place and hailed a black cab outside the Robin Hotel, near the junction with Buckingham Palace Road.

The other two robbers fled the scene and abandoned their green coloured Triumph motorcycle in Eaton Square. It is believed they hailed a taxi near Eccleston Mews.

Police are appealing for taxi drivers who might have been working in the area at 1pm to come forward. It is not known yet if anything of value was taken.

Any witnesses or anyone that could assist the police are asked to call 101, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
