The global authority on colour, Pantone, has announced Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue as its Colour of the Year for 2020.
Classic blue is now set to be the dominant shade in fashion and design for the next 12 months, and for the jewellery industry this colour offers many opportunities.
Pantone describes the colour as a timeless and enduring hue, elegant in its simplicity and suggestive of the sky at dusk.
While this year’s colour Living Coral was an “animating and life-affirming”, 2020’s shade “brings a sense of peace and tranquillity to the human spirit… instilling calm, confidence, and connection,” according to the company.
“We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by Pantone 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on,” says executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman.
“Imbued with a deep resonance, Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite evening sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”
The cobalt blue hue is said to be genderless and seasonless, so therefore will be used by fashion firms all year round.
For the jewellery industry, the Classic Blue shade can be tapped into using a variety of gemstones, including sapphires and Lapis Lazuli, while enamel and CZ adornments can also nod to the hue.
