The global authority on colour, Pantone, has announced Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral, as its Colour of the Year for 2019.
Living Coral is now set to be the dominant shade in fashion and design for the next 12 months, with many jewellery designers already incorporating this shade into their work.
The company describes the shade as orange, with a golden undertone.
“Just as coral reefs are a source of sustenance and shelter to sea life, vibrant yet mellow Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment,” says Pantone on the Colour of the Year for 2019.
Pantone says coral is suited for products targeting all ages and gender. With a nod to the natural world, in jewellery the shade can be used to express positivity and comfort, but can become more playful when mixed with textures and patterns.
The colour also nods to consumers’ need for human interaction in an increasingly digital world.
Pantone Colour Institute executive director, Leatrice Eiseman, explains: “Colour is an equalising lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities and this is particularly true for Living Coral. With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”
Jewellery using the Pantone Colour of the Year will likely incorporate the motif the shade is named after or a nod to nature. Living Coral may also be used to add a sense of calmness and positivity to a piece that lends itself to colour.
