Legendary mosaic brand debuts art jewels at show.
Italian mosaic company Sicis – responsible for decorating the likes of the Wynn hotel in Las Vegas as well as many private commissions – has celebrated its 25th anniversary by creating its very first range of luxury micro mosaic jewellery, debuted at BaselWorld last week.
The Sicis Jewels collection features handcrafted micro mosaic jewellery, watches, brooches and cufflinks created in yellow and white gold. Themes include flowers, the cubist movement, animals and marine life, with gemstones also incorporated into the designs.
Sicis founder and president Maurizio Leo Placuzzi said of the launch: “Mosaic has always been the ink that writes our story, following the same thread Sicis is now reinterpreting micro mosaic, one of the most ancient and elaborate techniques in jewellery manufacturing".
The brand has undertaken “years of historical research” to establish its micro mosaic workshop, and hopes to transmit ancient ideas and techniques through its collections. Each of the pieces is created using tiny strands or rods of coloured mosaic tiles, pieced together to create patterns, shapes and texture.
Prices for the jewellery will start at approximately €2,000 (£1,680) for a small butterfly pendant at retail, while the Rose Carpet necklace (pictured) costs €60,000 (£50,400) at wholesale.
Some of the designs unveiled at BaselWorld are part of a collaborative project, with Placuzzi working alongside interior designer Roger Thomas to create a geometric collection of micro mosaic jewels that nod towards artists and movements such as Picasso and cubism.
The collections are hand-made in their entirety in Italy. The brand was founded in Ravenna in 1987, has become known as an innovator in the use of mosaic for interiors, furniture and flooring.
At present Sicis operates furniture stores in Dubai and New Delhi, and will soon open a store in Hong Kong soon, however there are no plans as yet to open any standalone stores for its jewellery collections in the coming year.
