Surrey jeweller sued for £30k after woman loses diamond ring

Philip Lloyd

A man is suing Surrey’s Philip Lloyd Jewellers after his ex-girlfriend lost the diamond set in a £30,750 ring he had bought her.

Mark Hare gifted then girlfriend Olivia Claffey the ring as a Christmas present, a court heard.

After ostensibly wearing it on only a few occasions, Claffey wore the ring on a train journey.

The journey culminated in Claffey enlisting the help of rail staff for a four-hour hunt on the Victoria Station platform at which she disembarked, searching for the ring’s yellow diamond which appeared to have fallen off at some point.

The prosecuting Hare argued that the diamond had not been set properly in the ring, resulting in the damage and loss, and that he consequently deserved the full cost of the item returned to him.

Philip Lloyd Jewellers, however, reportedly argued that the damage occurred because of “heavy wear and lack of care” on Claffey’s part.

No ruling has been made yet by the presiding judge.

Philip Lloyd Jewellers is in Reigate in Surrey. It was founded in 2006 and specialises in Art Deco, vintage, Victorian styles of jewellery.
