Theo Fennell marks moon landing anniversary with limited edition models

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, and while many watch brands have launched pieces nodding to this momentous moment in history, British designer Theo Fennell has celebrated the occasion with the creation of unique memorabilia.

Theo Fennell recalls watching the moon landing with his great-aunt Mary who was born in 1880 and had seen London with no cars at all and was now seeing men walking on the moon. Ever since it has remained a seminal moment for the British designer, so he wanted to mark the significant anniversary with special creations.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary, Theo Fennell has designed two models to be made entirely by hand and in minute detail by Simon Coldicott, his multi-award winning craftsman, who has worked for Fennell for over 35 years.

Both the models of the Apollo 11 Capsule and the Command Module Columbia have been crafted in sterling silver and fine 24ct gold.

The Lunar Module ‘Eagle’, the two-person craft used by Armstrong and Aldrin to descend to the Moon’s surface, is mounted on grey sandstone, emulating the moon’s surface, and has the footprints of the astronauts carved in perfect, tiny detail.

The Command Module, the only portion of the spacecraft to return to Earth, is mounted on a base made of rock crystal and sodalite, carved to represent the North Pacific Ocean where it landed.

The British designer says these two models will make great, original gifts, for any space or science fans.
