Tiffany & Co has declared its intentions to take the next step in transparency when it comes to its diamond supply chain, revealing the “full craftsmanship journey” of every stone.
The company announced plans last year to become the first global luxury jeweller to provide the provenance (the region or country of origin) of its individually registered diamonds.
Now, Tiffany plans to inform customers of every stage of its diamond supply chain.
This, it hopes, will emphasise to customers the brand’s commitment to ethical and environmentally friendly diamond practices.
“Today we advance our commitment to diamond traceability one step further,” said Anisa Kamadoli Costa, chief sustainability officer, Tiffany & Co. “Our customers deserve to know that a Tiffany diamond was sourced with the highest standards, not only in quality but also in social and environmental responsibility. We believe that diamond traceability is the best means to ensure both.”
Tiffany said in a statement that the information will be available via its staff, and each individually registered diamond will also come with a certificate describing the stone’s history.
The company is able to trace each of its diamonds so accurately as it runs its own diamond workshops in Belgium, Mauritius, Botswana, Vietnam and Cambodia, as well as a Tiffany Gemological Laboratory in New York and five jewellery manufacturing workshops in the North America.
Tiffany, founded in 1837, described the several stages of its diamond supply and processing chain: responsible sourcing, preparation and planning, cutting and polishing, grading and quality control, setting, and finally being put in a ‘Tiffany Blue Box’ and placed on the shelf.
