Ethical jewellery producer to support more than 1,800 Colombians.
Ethical jewellery manufacturer and metal supplier Vipa Designs has launched ecological gold from the Coodmilla cooperative in the UK, marking the first time the gold has been available here.
Leicestershire-based Vipa has partnered with North American jeweller Toby Pomeroy to source the ecological gold from Coodmilla, also known as Cooperative Minera de la Llanada, which is based in the Narino department of South Colombia. The Coodmilla cooperative is comprised of 167 associates and provides a livelihood for more than 1,800 people.
Coodmilla mines responsibly, socially and environmentally, recovering gold through gravity methods without the use of cyanide or mercury. Currently, the cooperative sells its gold through its own trading platform, but aims to become the leader in responsible mining in Narino, and is currently working with the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) towards Fairmined certification.
Vipa has been producing ethical jewellery for a number of tears, promoting the use of recycled, ecological, Fairtrade and Fairmined metals, and hopes to widen the reach of ecological precious metals through the partnership with Pomeroy.
Vipa is a licensed importer, manufacturer and jeweller in Fairtrade silver, gold and platinum by Fairtrade International and the Fairtrade Foundation. It also provides ethical metals for casting in various finenesses and colours of gold as well as bronze, silver, palladium and platinum.
