US Fundraiser created to support designers through scholarships.

A one-off Barbie doll, accessorised in diamonds by jeweller to the stars Lorraine Schwartz, has sold for $7,500 in an online charity auction.

New York-based Schwartz, whose jewellery is a red carpet favourite for celebrities including Beyonce and Angelina Jolie, created the Barbie to raise money for scholarship programmes for the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

She was one of 12 designers who came up with accessories for Barbie that were sold on eBay and raised $16,500.

Fashion designer Devi Kroell raised over $1000 for her designer Barbie.

“I am very happy with the funds that we raised for a charitable purpose,” she said. “The project was also a lot of fun.”

Other fashion and jewellery designers including Alexis Bittar, Tory Burch, Botkier, Philip Crangi, Betsey Johnson, Isaac Mizrahi, Rachel Roy, Kate Spade and Albertus Swanepoel all submitted designs for the cause.

Barbie, who recently turned 50, is no stranger to designer luxury. In October, she was measured up for her first pair of Christian Louboutin. shoes. According to reports at the time, Louboutin insisted that the doll was reworked with thinner ankles in order that his shoes looked their best.
